WHO WHAT WHERE HOW

Hi, I'm Ryan.

I'm into church planting, in Iowa.

I have lived all over the state since I was born, and have a passion for Iowans to hear the gospel of Jesus and form healthy churches that learn the Bible and worship God who governs and transforms every area of life.

A Faithful, Gospel-Preaching Church Plant

This is the goal. Here are four values from my philosophy of ministry that I like to focus on:

Grace lies at the center of the gospel. In order to properly preach the gospel, grace must be understood clearly. The biblical definition of grace, as championed by Reformed theology, is undeserved pardon of sin based completely on Jesus Christ's sinless life and death on the cross (Romans 3:19-26, Eph. 2:1-10). Before salvation, humans are incapable of pleasing God or choosing God. The amazing work of Jesus Christ is thus causing spiritual rebirth into a new nature that can please God, and receive eternal life.

Jesus Alone

This definition of grace is a missional strength. Using it is of benefit to missional work in Iowa. How is it a strength? I’ll list two ways here, grace is a comfort (2 Thess. 2:16-17) and grace is a catalyst (Titus 2:11-14).

Grace As Comfort

The biblical definition of grace as undeserved pardon is comforting because it removes all pressure of salvation off of our backs. Many Iowans think that God’s view of them is wholly based on what they do, or that their ticket to heaven is purchased by obedience. This is not comforting, and yet every religion other than Christianity says just that. “Just be better” is not comforting. “Jesus was better for you” is.

Grace As Catalyst

Many Iowans think Christianity is a legalistic religion. Even many who claim to be Christians try to do good works purely based on their own willpower and resolve. Once grace is put in its proper place, as the foundation of salvation that cannot be lost, then Iowans can successfully obey God. When salvation is secure, by grace, then righteous actions will flow naturally, abundantly, and effectively in a place that desperately needs them. Grace alone will transform the self and society for the better (1 Cor. 1:4-7, 15:10). Grace says that "just be better" or "just try harder" is at best wrong and at worst hopeless. Instead, grace offers certainty for change by placing the responsibility for success squarely on Jesus' shoulders. You can do great things in life whenever Jesus' grace is the catalyst (Eph. 2:5-10).

We Christians love our Bibles. We love our Bibles so much that we want to use Latin to describe it: “Sola Scriptura.” Sola Scriptura means the Bible is the only rule for life, both this one and the next. How we understand salvation (by grace!) is found completely in the pages of the Bible. How we live our lives is found completely in the pages of the Bible (1 Cor. 4:6, 2 Timothy 3:16-17). The reason the Bible can be all this is because is it God's written Word.

Christians in Iowa need more Bible in their hearts and minds.

Because God is the source, the Bible offers absolute truth to any who would open it's pages. Feelings, desires, rich and sucessful people, artificial intelligence, and PhDs try their hardest to be sources of truth, but it is only God who fully understands the depths of every person and is able to offer the truth everyone desires. My mission is to put Iowan's souls at ease as they rest in the timeless and absolute truth found in the Bible (Romans 15:4).

One of the great tragedies of our day is how Christians are tolerating the separation of the Church from their identity.

Whether it’s because of social fear, harm done by a church in the past, busyness with the rest of life, or whatever, “church” in Iowa has become a place rather than a people. Attendance is for what can be consumed, rather than for the people who can be loved and the God who must be worshiped.

This church plant will make great effort to define the church, with the Word and sacraments, as essential to one’s life and witness. When the church is tied to one’s identity like this, worship becomes corporate and not hollow, fellowship becomes warm and desirable, discipleship becomes challenging and relevant, and mercy ministry becomes collaborative and synergistic. The Church becomes a group of people, and not a building, with whom one can endure hardship, overcome sin, and glorify God with all of life.

This one is a collective of ideas.

Work, Family, and Society

According to the Bible, Jesus is Lord over every area of life (1 Cor. 10:13, 15:24-28). There are hundreds of places in the Bible where God reveals how he designed the family and society, including the roles and jobs within each (for example, Deut. 6:3-9, Eph. 6:1-9). We are meant to invest our time, money, creativity, and skills in family and society according to God's methods and goals. The Bible frames the family as the core place for evangelism and life training, as well as a vital component of society. The Bible frames work as a) something that inherently pleases God when done well, b) a sort of ministry opportunity to serve others as Jesus served us, and c) as contributing a small part to a healthy society that itself, when run according to the Bible’s standards, glorifies God.

Evangelism

This one is probably what you were thinking of when I mentioned “mission.” And you should, because sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with every nation in the world, and every single person in those nations, is the central mission of God’s people (Matthew 28:19-20). I would love to start a community of believers whose conversations regularly include the topic of the gospel, who get excited to hear each other’s efforts of reaching the lost, and who welcome newcomers to church with grace and eventual life-long discipleship.

Cedar Rapids, IA

I am serving as an assistant pastor in Cedar Rapids at a recently planted church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, where I am preparing to plant. In God's good timing, the goal is to begin a church plant within the next year or so.

Let's Do This

If God has given you the means and the desire to support me and my family as we pursue this vision, you can

Pray

Success is 100% measured by whether or not God acts. And the Bible is clear that God acts when his people wait on Him (Isaiah 64:4). So wait on God with me, praying temple-access-level prayers (Jonah 2:7, read Hebrews 10:19 if you want this level of acces), that God would give fruitfulness to my labors.

These things require prayer:

  • 1. Trinity Presbyterian Church: pray for Trinity's growth.
  • 2. Fruitfulness: pray that the efforts of me and my family, and those who labor with us, are fruitful. Pray that, through us, people receive grace, submit to God's Word, join His Church, and work His mission.
  • 3. Steadfastness: missionary efforts in Iowa take time. Pray that we will not grow weary in our task.
  • 4. New core groups in desolate places in Iowa. By "desolate" I'm talking spiritually. We need people who travel long distances to attend a good church to seriously consider a church in their area.
